Dr Anthony Li qualifies in leadless pacemaker insertion

Dr Anthony Li travelled to Geneva earlier this month to attend training in leadless pacemaker insertion, a new style of device which will have massively improved benefits for patients. With older generation pacemakers, the battery box is attached to a number of pacemaker leads (the amount depending on the patient’s condition, and where in the heart needs help synchronising a muscle contraction). The leads have to be placed in very specific areas of the heart muscle in order to function as needed, and before the leads settle into the heart muscle, occasionally they can move and dislodge, requiring removal and a new lead inserted. WIth new generation leadless pacemakers, this risk is removed resulting in reduced procedure time, reduced hospital stays for patients and an all round smoother process from start to finish.
